Many people and businesses use Facebook for work related purposes and everything that the famous social network changes or improves is of great interest for them. Facebook just announced that it will change the news feed algorithm, all with the purpose to prioritize content from friends over pages.
The announcement was made by Facebook product manager, Max Eulenstein.
"As more people and pages are sharing more content," Eulenstein said, the changes were a response to the feedback received from these Facebook users. The statement added that "we need to keep improving News Feed to get this balance right."
"Referral traffic to media publishers from Facebook has more than doubled in the past 18 months and we’re always looking for ways to optimize how content is discovered and consumed," the statement said. "Media content is a key part of the experience for people on Facebook and we’re committed to helping publishers find the right audience for their content."
Actually, Facebook claimed that there are no less than three important updates made to the News Feed algorithms to give users a balanced mix of updates from friends, public figures, businesses, but also publishers and community organizations. The company alleged that the content displayed will be adjusted to what the user is interested in seeing and learning every day.
Here are the three main changes introduced:
Seeing multiple content: If until now Facebook had a certain type of rule which banned users from seeing multiple posts from the same source in a row, now the rule will be "relaxed." This means that people will get much more to see in their news feeds, as well as more updates.
More content from close friends: If until now many Facebook users complained about not seeing content from close friends or friends they were interested in, the new update changes that. Users will get more posts in their News Feed, including photos, status updates or videos from their closest friends. Users will also find in their News Feed content from the pages they like to interact with. Facebook alleged that it will try its best to deliver to users exactly what they are interested in seeing.
Friends' interactions with a post: The third update will bring a change to how friends' interactions with a post are displayed on the social network's News Feed. Allegedly, many people complained about seeing stories about their friends liking or commenting on a post. Facebook announced that from now on these posts will be placed lower in the News Feed or will not be displayed at all.
The changes can be quite appreciated by people with many connections, who constantly found themselves in the situation of missing important posts from close friends, in the favor of media or corporate posts. However, the social network warned customers that the "impact of these changes on your page’s distribution will vary considerably depending on the composition of your audience and your posting activity. In some cases, post reach and referral traffic could potentially decline."
Facebook is without a doubt the most popular social network in the world, with over 1.4 billion users.
The famous company is said to generate the majority of its revenue through advertising.
